Smile after dental crowns

If you have a tooth that has been damaged or needs some work, a dental crown could be the solution for you. Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, including metal alloys, ceramics, porcelain, porcelain-fused to metal, and composite resin. Depending on the material used, the restoration can be made to match the color of the surrounding teeth. Share Dentistry in Grapevine uses this dental treatment to address a number of issues.

What are crowns used for?

A dental crown, also called a “cap” as it completely covers a tooth once it is placed, can be used to:

  • Support a tooth with a large filling
  • Hold together a tooth that is cracked or in danger of breaking
  • Cover a discolored or misshapen tooth
  • Cover a tooth that has been treated with a root canal treatment
  • Restore functionality after a dental implant has been placed

What is the procedure for dental crowns?

You will need to visit our office at Share Dentistry at least two times to have a dental crown placed. During your first appointment, your dentist will prepare the tooth receiving the crown by shaving down a portion of the enamel. This will create enough room for the crown to fit. If, on the other hand, the tooth is too weak to support a crown, it can first be built up with filling material. When the correct size and shape has been reached, your dentist will make an impression of the tooth to send to a dental laboratory where the crown will be created. A temporary crown will be placed on the prepared tooth to keep it protected until your next visit.

After the completed crown returns from the dental lab, you will make another visit to our office to have the temporary crown removed and replaced by the permanent crown. Your dentist can make adjustments to the crown as needed in order to achieve the perfect fit before cementing it into place.

Caring for teeth

After a crown has been placed, you will need to take a bit of extra care to make sure that the crown can be used for a long time. Maintain a diligent oral care routine that includes regular brushing and flossing and avoid chewing hard foods, as they can cause damage to a crown.
