Dental fillings are a useful procedure in general dentistry that can be utilized to restore a tooth that has been damaged by decay back to its normal shape and function. Obviously, it would be best to avoid needing a filling in the first place through regular cleanings and exams, but once a cavity forms, it may be inevitable. Dental fillings are meant to restore the natural structure of your tooth as well as protect it from further damage from bacteria and infection that cause cavities. Filling a hole that was created by bacteria in your tooth will ensure that no more food, sugar, or bacteria get into that hole to cause more problems. Here at Share Dentistry in Grapevine, we want all of our clients to be well informed on their dental procedures.
The dentist will first remove any decayed tooth material, or pulp, clean the infected area, and then subsequently fill the cleaned out cavity with a filling material. Most often, the material used is a colored resin that matches your tooth color perfectly, there are also other types of fillings such as gold fillings, amalgam fillings, and porcelain fillings.
You will decide with your dentist which filling material is best for your unique situation. It may be a matter of preference, there are certain benefits to different filling materials.
Gold fillings are made specially to order from a laboratory and subsequently cemented into the cavity. This type of filling can last upwards of 20 years and is tolerated very well by the body. It is, however, the most expensive option.
Amalgam (silver) fillings are long-lasting and inexpensive. However, the downside to these fillings is that many people dislike the way they look and prefer a more natural filling material.
Composite resin fillings are colored to be the same color as your teeth and are not very expensive. However, this type of filling generally lasts less than ten years and sometimes as little as three years.
Porcelain fillings are utilized as inlays and on lays which are a type of cavity filling. They can be matched to your tooth color and are resistant to stains. The price, however, is similar to gold.
